Diesel Motorhome – A Great Choice For Sure

I’ll have to admit right here – I’m very biased about diesel engines, and a diesel motorhome, in particular.

First of all – I’m a guy. Guys are typically engine freaks, and most of us really appreciate a great engine. Mechanical stuff fascinates us, and the diesel engine has always been held in great respect by me, for sure. It used to be that the almighty diesel engine was used almost exclusively by the big 18-wheelers – the Peterbuilts and Freightliners and all the rest.

And, of course, they were (and are) great. But over the last decade or so, the diesel engine has begun to make its way into a bunch of American heavy-duty pickups – and a few 1-ton vans as well. Since these large American vans and trucks are the basis for many of the motorhomes made in the USA, is was only natural that the motorhome manufacturers began to pile onto this technology as well. And, for good reason, too. First and foremost, these big rigs (the motorhomes) are quite heavy, and the passenger car gas engines were simply having a difficult time hauling all of that mass around. Second, the overworked gas engines returned pretty poor gas mileage as well.

When those early Ford, IH and GM diesel engines began to find their way under the hoods of diesel motorhomes, the public began to buy them in ever-larger quantities. These days, it’s not unusual to find a diesel motorhome with 200,000 + miles on it still chugging down the highway – and returning 15 miles per gallon, too! If you can find a good diesel motorhome, I think you’ll be happy with your purchase for many years to come.
